Humanity has many common problems, including food insecurity, malnourishment, overpopulation, unemployment, and environmental degradation. Just like Paul Shapiro, who aims to inspire people to solve environmental and social problems, you too can contribute to helping humanity. Read on to understand more about the causes of these problems.
Malnourishment
While it may not be immediately apparent why malnourishment is so essential, it is a major global health problem. Its impacts on economic growth, social life, and even health can be detrimental. The world is faced with more than a billion cases of malnutrition worldwide, and the cost of this epidemic is staggering. In addition to these preventable deaths, malnutrition costs society billions annually.
Globally, a lack of awareness about properly feeding a child can result in a condition called a nutritional deficiency. In some cases, malnutrition can lead to anemia, a condition that causes the child to become anemic. Treatment for malnutrition depends on the severity of the problem and may involve intravenous nutrition. Therefore, the healthcare team is closely monitoring the patient’s nutrition status.
Unemployment
The economic costs of unemployment are enormous. Unemployed individuals are less likely to find new jobs, and their earnings decline. However, the stigma of being unemployed makes people more likely to stay unemployed longer. This may be why people with the worst unemployment problems take longer to find a new job and are disadvantaged in the labor market. In addition, the industries that previously employed them may shift operations elsewhere or permanently reduce employment levels. As a result, the quality of employment declines.
Unemployment harms society as a whole. Unemployed people have less disposable income. As a result, they are less likely to spend, which reduces the economy. The effect of lower purchasing power causes other people to lose their jobs. These effects can have negative ramifications for a person’s health. In addition, unemployment affects a person’s physical and mental health. As such, it is essential to consider the effects of unemployment before making policy decisions about employment.
Environmental Degradation
Degrading the environment is a severe problem affecting people and the world’s ecosystems. The primary causes of environmental degradation are land damage and pollution. Weedy plant species that are invasive and alien to the local environment significantly cause ecological degradation. These species grow in a weakened climate less suitable for the native ecosystem. They often degrade local greenery and do not provide good food assets to the ecosystems. Pollution also affects water and air resources. Air pollution is another common problem of humanity. Air pollution can cause health issues in humans and animals.
Humanity is increasingly affected by global environmental degradation caused by our consumption of natural resources and rapid population growth. This has led to various problems, such as air pollution, a scarcity of natural resources, and piles of household garbage. Figure 1.2 shows the trend of the world population. In 2011, the world population reached seven billion, posing a significant challenge to the planet’s natural resources. Environmental conflicts are yet another problem associated with rapid population growth.
Conflicts Between Nations
Conflicts between nations are common problems of humanity and a primary cause of international conflict. Conflicts between groups of people are inevitable and should be resolved as peacefully as possible. The goal of conflict resolution is to confine conflicts to a set of norms and rules that encourage peaceful discussion of differences and proscribe violence to settle disputes. Some forms of violence are generally considered acceptable but may also be used as a last resort.
The legal authority to declare war raises several normative and descriptive problems. Depending on the context, war may reflect people’s desires or inform them of the wishes of their fellow citizens. Likewise, it may be the case that a ruling elite seeks to advance the interests of the masses rather than those of the elite. In the latter case, the legitimacy of war may depend on the political will of a ruling elite, who is under no obligation to protect the public, despite the danger of its consequences.
